BRIEF DESCRIPTION For this whole project, we first started off by reading a book in Ms.Erin's class called Into The Wild by Jack London which was a but who man who threw everything away to go live a happy life into the wild. We later started building our headlamps, compasses, and soda can stoves and planning out our meals for the camping trip to Anza Borrego Desert. We also started to create a journal filled up with everything we did throughout this whole entire project to reflect on our experience. OVERALL EXPERIENCE SECTION My favorite part of the trip was the bond we created. Our team created a bond so strong throughout this project that could never ever be replaced. We went through a bad tragedy but that tragedy only made us closer and that is everything I could ever ask for. I also enjoyed the hike down to the Oasis. It was very amazing because I never seen anything like it or even been to a waterfall before. I enjoyed spending time with friends on the way there. Our laughs and smiles were unexplained and unforgettable. A lesson I learned throughout this project was to never be afraid to take risks and try new things. Life is way more interesting when you do things you haven't done before.
HEADLAMP SECTION The headlamps we made have a resistor and a switch and also a battery. We used a mint can as the base of the whole headlamp. A mint can headlamp has a 4.5 voltage battery. A resistor is used to prevent the LED's from burning out. We put them in a parallel circuit. A parallel circuit is a type of circuit where each light has its own positive and negative wire. We later did the calculations, and found that the total resistance is 75 Ohms. And the resistance for one resistor is 18.75 Ohms. We will include elastic and Velcro and put in on our heads to provide light in even in the daytime.
SODA CAN STOVE We made soda can stoves so that we would be able to cook food on our camping trip. In order to cook our food, we first needed to determine how much fuel we need. Our group cooked pasta. We needed to multiply the fuel by four because that was the amount of people who were in our group. The amount of energy this type of chemical can make is about 22,000 J/g. The soda can stove will make a somewhat medium blue flame. We used a soda can stove, a cutting knife, and sharpies. Those were the main things that were used during the soda can stove process.
COMPASSES We made the compasses using magnets that have poles which are the North and South poles. We used a magnet so that it can direct us to different directions. While making these compasses, Earths magnetic field makes the magnet point North. Once you put a compass near a magnet, they will both start to attract. If Earth's magnetic field were ever to change places, the magnetic field would have an alternating direction. The liquid in the compass is so that the compass needle does not keep spinning.
